Rehoboth serves up beach volleyball May 13-14

May 11, 2023

More than 400 beach volleyball players have already preregistered to play in this weekend’s tournament in Rehoboth Beach, according to tourney organizers Mid-Atlantic Volleyball.

The largest group of players, with 150 teams so far, has signed up for men’s and women’s doubles (two per team) Saturday, May 13. While MAV prefers to see preregistrations, many players wait until tournament day to sign up, and the Boardwalk is always jammed with players on the morning of the weekend tournaments. Waiting until the last minute can be risky in that sometimes the more popular divisions are fully booked, but MAV will generally find a place for teams that wish to participate.

There will be a large contingent of juniors playing the weekend tournament, with divisions of 12 and under, 14 and under, 16 and under, and 18 and under in both boys’ and girls’ competitions. Most of the junior players will compete Sunday, May 14.

For Sunday, the largest number of preregistrations is in the coed doubles division. Fourteen teams have preregistered in the coed doubles A level, seven teams in the B level and 16 teams in the coed BB level as of May 9, and five teams have preregistered in the top level of AAA coed doubles.

Some of the more fun competitions and vociferous players can be found with the coed sixes teams that play Sunday in both the A and B levels. To date, only three teams have registered in advance, but MAV expects 10 to 15 teams will ultimately sign up in these lively divisions.

Very few senior teams (50-plus and 60-plus doubles on Saturday and fours on Sunday) have preregistered to date, and if not enough teams register to play, those divisions will be canceled.

Longtime beach player Karen Love of Montgomery County, Md., summed it up saying, “Our group looks forward to the two MAV tournaments in Rehoboth every year. I’ve been coming every year for over 30 years. MAV is a great organization, great people, fun competition and a weekend of great times with friends.”

Players should go to mavolleyball.org to preregister, and questions should be emailed to mav@mavolleyball.org.
