Religion in Art: The Evangelists lecture series starts March 6

March 1, 2024

Religion in Art: The Evangelists, a four-week lecture/discussion series, will begin Wednesday, March 6, at Groome Church, 601 Savannah Road, Lewes.

Participants will explore how artists depicted and interpreted the four apostles Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The series will take a look at a variety of artists from different historical periods, including works by Caravaggio, van Leyden and Velázquez.

The free event, open to the public, consists of a lecture, discussion, and question-and-answer period. It also includes a complimentary soup and sandwich lunch.

Sessions are held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. each Wednesday, March 6, 13, 20  and 27.

The Rev. Dr. S. Willard Crossan III, Groome pastor, said, “The Religion in Art series has become quite popular and well received. We had initially planned a one-and-done event, but after the initial series last spring, Christ’s Journey to the Cross, we received several requests to continue the series, taking on other events and topics in the Bible. With each series, I am increasingly impressed by the level of questions asked, and depth of knowledge and understanding the discussions engender.”
