In response to Eban Brittingham's recent letter about the column where I mentioned an escaped white rabbit: the rabbit was outside for at least two weeks, not only in a grassy vacant lot behind Eban's home, but also in another neighbor's backyard. And I did not lure the rabbit out of his backyard with any kind of food; it was already out wandering around on its own. I placed one small handful of dry cat food in the middle of the vacant lot. Then my husband went to the trouble and expense of going to a pet store and purchasing a $15 bag of rabbit food.
Another neighbor told me they saw it sleeping under a pile of mulch; I simply reported what I was told. Thank you for your treatise on what kind of rabbit it is! Your wife was also very particular about this when she came to my front door to tell me it was her family's rabbit. I simply saw an animal that looked like someone's pet out in the cold for several days and worried about how it would survive in January.
Also, I have nothing to do with the large dog you tagged onto the end of your letter, but it could well have killed your loose rabbit! I have only personally seen one loose dog in Milton since we moved back down here to my childhood home seven years ago. Most dogs I see are walked on a leash.
Finally, I haven't seen the rabbit loose since you read my column, so maybe it doesn't get out every day and return home. Since the rabbit is now safe in your care, then maybe my article achieved its purpose!
By the way, I received a commendation email for my column from the Eastern Shore Rabbit Rescue.
