A response to Jones’ ‘Response to Oeffner’s net reel’ letter

September 17, 2021

I was shocked and horrified to read Alicia Jones’ response to Oeffner’s net reel letter in the Sept. 10 issue of the Cape Gazette! All that transpired with the removal and new placement of the menhaden net reel is complicated. However, it appears as if the Lewes Historical Society did not follow proper vetting procedures when they made this drastic move.

I went down to the historic district in Lewes to see the menhaden net reel and was struck with how beautiful is it! It is a sculpture rich in art and history. I remember seeing it near the Overfalls, which might be a more appropriate place for it because it’s so large, and because there is more space near the Overfalls to showcase this beautiful structure. I can visualize the amazing and industrious people who worked on the reel.

Most importantly, I’m writing to strongly object to the letter by Alicia Jones regarding my dear friend Joan Oeffner. I will not tolerate the slightest suggestion that Joan is not sensitive to the African American community in Lewes. Alicia criticized her for saying she “danced and sang” with many African American friends. I know Joan and she loves to dance and enjoy life. She has told me about dancing with her African American neighbors. She has also enthusiastically run trolly tours in Lewes where she talks about the history of Lewes. Joan is active on civic associations in Lewes as well as being very active in her church. She is warm and welcoming to all people, and we are lucky to be able to call her a friend and neighbor in Lewes.
