Route 24 already too developed

July 15, 2025

As a Saddle Ridge resident, I feel there has been too much development in Sussex County, especially along Route 24. The traffic is already horrendous during certain times of the day, and between the proposed Belle Mead development and the new shopping center coming soon, the roads around us are not designed to handle the additional traffic. It can barely handle the current traffic volume, especially during the summer peak season.

You also have the new car wash, gas station and car dealership already scheduled for the same area, along with other commercial buildings in the queue. Not to mention all the other housing developments currently under construction up and down Route 24. There have been at least two major accidents right in front of Saddle Ridge just in the last two months because of traffic and impatient drivers.

And just as important, the school board has already stated the district is busting at the seems and can’t handle the expected increase in students attending our schools. We just keep approving more and more development throughout the Lewes and Rehoboth ZIP codes. It has to stop. They are putting the safety of our residents at risk by ignoring the issues at hand. I encourage Sussex County Council to vote no on Belle Mead.
