Route 24 road construction hits a snag

DelDOT will resume widening project when all utilities are moved
September 11, 2020

Work on the Route 24 road construction project in the Rehoboth Beach-Lewes area has been put on hold for about a month as state transportation officials wait for Verizon to relocate utilities along the roadway.

Delaware Department of Transportation spokesman Charles “C. R.” McLeod said transportation officials expect road work to resume in the near future.

“It will impact the completion schedule, but how much we won’t know until Verizon completes its work and construction resumes,” McLeod said.

DelDOT has planned two phases of work on Route 24 from Route 1 to the Love Creek bridge. The first phase, at a cost of $7 million, started in March and is expected to be completed in fall or winter 2022.

Under the first phase, Route 24 will be widened from two lanes to four lanes with a center left-turn lane from Route 1 to Mulberry Knoll Road. The project will provide intersection improvements at Plantation Road/Warrington Road and place a new signal at the intersection near the entrance to Beebe Healthcare’s medical campus and the Residence Inn by Marriott, which is under construction.

Once complete, the Plantation Road/Warrington Road intersection with Route 24 will have dedicated right-turn lanes, a through-traffic lane, a shared left-turn/through lane and a dedicated left-turn lane from both Plantation Road and Warrington Road. Eastbound and westbound Route 24 will have dedicated left-turn lanes, two through lanes and a dedicated right-turn lane.

Phase 2, at a cost of $5 million, will continue the widening of Route 24 past Beacon Middle School and Love Creek Elementary School to the entrance of the Saddle Ridge subdivision. The road will then remain two lanes, with an added center turn lane, to the bridge. Phase 2 is tentatively scheduled to begin in 2021 and be completed in 2022.
