I was very happy to read Feb. 11 that there will be a Democratic primary for the 6th District Senate Seat that Ernie Lopez now holds. I know Ernie. He has always been available to his constituents. He’s decided not to run again and this should be an interesting election for a host of reasons.
I’m a Democrat, so I have an interest in who our candidate will be. Jack Bucchioni and Russell Huxtable have both announced their intentions to run. I know Jack. I met him when he ran against Steve Smyk in 2018. I had several conversations with Jack. I didn’t feel he had a grasp of the issues confronting those of us in the 6th District at the time. When I read of his intention to run for Ernie’s seat Sept. 21, I wasn’t encouraged. He didn’t seem to understand that he was running in a local election and his references to national politics were not particularly inspiring.
Russell Huxtable clearly understands what we are facing here. He understands that growth needs to be managed. I explored his website russhuxtable.com. He clearly articulates what he believes is important for us in the 6th. He seems to have covered it all. He knows the county. He’s a native Delawarean – he knows the state, he’s been working on community issues for over 18 years. He believes in “servant leadership.” From what I’ve learned, he puts his money where his mouth is – he talks the talk and walks the walk.
Jack filed early. If you go to his website bucchioni22.com, the first thing you are hit with is a request for donations. Russ doesn’t ask for donations the minute you land on his site. Russ introduces himself and moves onto the issues he believes are important to those of us who live here.
Personally, I’m not impressed by the pictures Jack has of himself standing with people he deems “important.” I don’t think anyone is entitled to hold any office. As a voter, I want someone who represents me and cares about the quality of life in our area.
I hope to see more of Russ in the coming weeks. I hope he gives us all an opportunity to meet him personally.
Jack wants “to see Sussex County get Democratic representation.” I want to see Sussex County get competent representation. I believe Russ can deliver on that.
