Sara Ann Marvel, former star athlete
Sara Ann Marvel passed away Saturday, Nov. 28, 2015, at home.
Sara was an assistant manager with Super G in Long Neck where she worked the past 15 years.
She was a graduate of Sussex Central High School Class of 1980, and was a star athlete in softball, basketball and field hockey. Sara received a full scholarship to play basketball at Mount St. Mary’s University. After suffering a career-ending knee injury, and no longer able to play basketball, Sara transferred to Salisbury State University and graduated with her bachelor’s degree in education. Sara also had worked with her family's business, Sports Alley, in Georgetown, and was a caregiver for her late mother.
Sara was a sports enthusiast and although she was no longer able to play the sports that she dearly loved, she remained active and enjoyed anything outdoors, especially fishing. She was an avid fan of the Baltimore Ravens and Baltimore Orioles.
Sara was preceded in death by her parents, Nutter D. “Bo” Marvel Jr., and Elizabeth A. “Betty Ann” (Hitchens) Marvel; and her two beloved cats, Cujo and Mikey.
She is survived by four siblings, Nutter D. “David” Marvel III and Dee, John Marvel and Janet, Tom Marvel and Karen, all of Georgetown, and Nancy Marvel of Lewes; two nieces, two nephews, four great-nieces and three great-nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, with visitation after noon. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, and in support of Sara’s love of sports, the family suggests donations to Georgetown Little League, PO Box 105, Georgetown, DE 19947.
