The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored Love Creek Elementary School fifth-graders Lennon Marshall and Ibrahim Alatta for their leadership, effort and excellence.
The students were recognized during a ceremony at school and received $20 bookstore gift cards.
According to Principal Equetta Jones, Lennon Marshall demonstrates the qualities of a true leader, not through titles or recognition, but through consistent, thoughtful action. Whether he is helping a classmate solve a problem, including others in group activities or offering a kind word to someone who is having a tough day, she said Lennon leads with empathy and integrity.
“His ability to recognize when someone needs support and step in without being asked speaks volumes about his character. What sets Lennon apart is his natural inclination to serve others and foster a sense of belonging. He models inclusiveness, respect and compassion in every interaction, creating a positive environment for both peers and adults alike. His maturity and emotional intelligence far exceed his years, and his presence uplifts those around him. Lennon demonstrates strong character, emotional leadership and a commitment to community. He is not only an outstanding student, but also the kind of young person who inspires others to be better,” said Jones.
Jones recognized Ibrahim Alatta for exemplifying what it means to create a welcoming and respectful environment for all. Ibrahim consistently goes out of his way to include others, she said, especially those who may feel different or left out. Whether helping a new student feel at home, showing patience and understanding to peers with different backgrounds or learning styles, or simply leading with kindness, Ibrahim is a model of empathy and acceptance.
“Ibrahim embraces the rich differences that make the Love Creek school community unique and serves as a quiet yet powerful leader who demonstrates that inclusion is more than a word; it’s an action. He listens with respect, speaks with care, and celebrates the identities and stories of others. Ibrahim reminds us that every student belongs and that every voice matters,” said Jones.
