SDARJ recognizes Fred Thomas Middle students

December 15, 2025

The Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice recently honored Frederick Thomas Middle School students Jaida White and Zayden Long for their leadership, effort and excellence. The students were recognized in a ceremony at the school and received $20 gift cards to Browseabout Books in Rehoboth Beach.

This is the second time Jaida, now a seventh-grader, has been recognized for excellence. Jaida maintains a strong academic standing in all her classes, and her teachers say she remains a prime example of a Fred Thomas All-Star. Jaida is also an avid track and field athlete, running the 100-meter and 400-meter sprints for the school team. She also participates in the Delaware AAU Elite Track Club.

According to his teachers, Zayden sets an example of excellence within his friend group, in the eighth-grade hallway and on the football field. Zayden has repeatedly helped his team achieve winning seasons. FTMS Teacher of the Year Greg Berman said, "Zayden has been a rock star since day one."

SDARJ initiated the African American Achievement Award to recognize students who represent the ideals of leadership, improvement, effort and excellence in their schools. Students from each school in the Cape Henlopen and Indian River school districts are recognized throughout the school year.

SDARJ is a nonpartisan organization that educates, informs and advocates for racial justice, equality and fair opportunity.
