Sea Barre set to open Sea Cycle Indoor
Sea Barre Fitness owner Ellen Spell is set to open a new indoor cycling studio later this month that she says is nothing like the spin classes offered in the Lewes area.
Sea Cycle Indoor takes indoor cycling to the next level by adding choreographed moves that follow the beat of the music. The result is a fun, 45-minute full-body workout.
“I didn’t just want to do spin classes because there is a lot of spin around here,” said Spell, who was trying to add more fitness options for her clients. “This feels like a dance party on a bike. You’re doing pushups, tricep pushups, all different kinds of moves while riding to the beat of the music.”
The goals are different from a typical spin class, she said. The group works together, and a rider isn’t trying to beat their best time or hit a target heart-rate zone.
“It’s low pressure,” she said, noting that the room is very dimly lit. “If you want to sit back and get a drink of water, you can sit back. No one’s looking at you.”
Spell will offer classes throughout the day, beginning as early as 5:45 a.m. and as late as 6 p.m. on weekdays. An introductory class, Sea Cycle 101, will be available for beginners, though Spell recommends that someone take the regular class first to get an idea of how the class works.
Then, she said, Sea Cycle 101 will break down the moves, show how to set up the bicycle and how to clip in and clip out with the clipless cycling shoes.
Clipless shoes, which lock into the pedals, are required for the class, but Sea Cycle will have shoes on hand for anyone who doesn’t have their own.
“That’s for safety reasons, and it’s a smoother, better ride,” Spell said. “It’s better for your joints, and you get about 30 percent more out of the workout by wearing them.”
A unique feature at Sea Cycle is the ability to reserve a bike ahead of the class. By going to the website, Spell said, clients can not only reserve a spot in the class, but also the specific bike they wish to ride.
“Then they don’t have to get here an hour early and stand next to their bike to hold their spot,” she said.
