After celebrating the lacrosse careers of five seniors, the girls laxing it up at Sussex Academy came out of a battle against Smyrna with a 13-9 win May 6.
Despite it being a Senior Night, the Eagles were not going to lay down easy, as they kept things close until the hosts pulled away in the fourth quarter.
Freshman Caroline Mitchell was between the pipes and collected six saves, going toe-to-toe with Smyrna senior Norah Kelly, who stopped 10 shots.
Senior Ellie Merrick led Sussex Academy with four goals and one assist. Junior Liz Layton and sophomore Reilly Mobilia each had three goals and two assists. Shea Danahy’s two goals and two assists gave her a memorable Senior Night. Sophomore Brooklyn Montgomery's goal put the icing on the cake of the 13-9 win.
The defense may have given up nine goals, but the girls made Smyrna work for goals with seniors Lily Bisaha and Ava Yenovkian leading the security in front of the cage.
At 7-6, Sussex Academy has a chance to supplement its tournament formula with away games against Newark Charter and Tatnall School.
Milestone alert – Merrick, Danahy and Layton were honored before their May 1 15-11 victory over Caravel Academy for joining the 100-point club. Danahy is just two goals away from 100 goals in her career.
