Senior center land should be left open

September 9, 2025

It was with great interest that I read Chris Flood’s article regarding the open space on Hebron Road. The sign on Hebron Road stands in front of several mowed acres declaring that the senior center is coming soon. I pass it often. Each time I wonder why it is not going to stay open land, something that is only shrinking in Rehoboth. Small, unconnected areas of open space cannot easily become healthy ecosystems. This land is in close proximity to state lands where the Junction and Breakwater Trail passes. It would be a wonderful addition to this open space. It would mean that the senior center does not expand, or that it has a second smaller space. As a senior, I would be in full support of this. Open space benefits all generations. As the impact of climate change only gets worse, saving open space while allowing it to be natural land benefits future generations most of all. As I enter my final years, I would like to advocate for the future.
