Shirley J. Emerson, proud of her family

Shirley J. Emerson, 67, of Dagsboro passed away peacefully surrounded by her loving family Friday, June 7, 2019, at her home.

She was born in Ocean View July 6, 1951, daughter of the late Donald Cooper and Jean (Bertrand) Cooper.  She was a graduate of John M. Clayton High School class of 1969.  

Shirley worked for several years as a paper carrier for the News Journal and also worked for Ames Department Store in the 1970s and 1980s.  She enjoyed making beaded jewelry, crafting, painting with oils, but most of all spending time with her family.  Shirley was proud of her family and would make it to all of her grandchildren’s and great-grandchildren’s sporting and academic events.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George W. Emerson Jr. in 2015.  She is survived by a son, Gregory Lee Emerson and his wife Joan of Frankford; two daughters, Tonia Emerson of Dagsboro and Lisa Wells and her husband Rob of Dagsboro; two brothers, Donald Cooper Jr. and his wife Betty of Smyrna and Wayne Cooper of Frankford; two sisters, Brenda Poole and her husband Carl of Roxana and Evelyn Hopkins and her husband Ivory of Harbeson; seven grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

A funeral service celebrating Shirley’s life will be held at 3 p.m., Thursday, June 13, at the Ocean View Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 38040 Muddy Neck Road, Ocean View,  where friends and family may visit after 2 p.m.  Interment will follow at Dagsboro Redmen Memorial Cemetery in Dagsboro.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in Shirley’s name to Seasons Hospice, 220 Continental Dr., Suite 407, Newark, DE 19713.
