Shore Democrats honor Rehoboth resident for volunteerism
Jane Hovington, former leader of the Sussex County NAACP, has taken the reins as the new interim chair of the Sussex County Democratic Committee.
Hovington replaces Mitch Crane, who stepped down to become Delaware’s new deputy insurance commissioner, effective Jan. 3.
Crane said Hovington, who previously served as a vice chair of the committee, will fill the remainder of his term until elections are held in March.
Hovington, who will be the first African-American committee chair, was welcomed by her peers during a Dec. 14 luncheon hosted by the Shore Democrats at Cripple Creek Country Club in Dagsboro.
“I’ve been in politics for 30 years,” Hovington said. “I envision us coming together and getting Democratic candidates elected. If we come together and work together, we can make some changes.”
The Shore Democrats also presented the annual Lois Lipsett Volunteer Service Award to Rehoboth Beach resident Joanne Cabry.
“She is so involved in so many things, starting with the Richard Allen school, the Center for the Inland Bays, repealing the death penalty in Delaware, supporting gun control measures in the state, adopting the equal protection clause for the state Constitution, promoting participation in Sussex Unity,” said Shore Democrats President Anne Allen, naming just a few of Cabry’s involvements throughout the state and county. “This is more than well-deserved.”
Cabry also serves as the president of the Progressive Democrats of Sussex County, one of several Democratic membership clubs in southern Delaware. Allen praised Cabry’s effort to form the “Trump Opposition Team, a group of subcommittees aimed at fighting president-elect Donald Trump’s plans, from healthcare to environmental regulations.
“This is an honor, and it couldn’t have come at a better time,” Cabry said after receiving the award. “I’m worried right now, as we all are, but I refuse to give up on this country. I’d like to accept this award in honor of all of us – we have to work together.”
