Skate the Cape Shred Fest returns to state park Nov. 1-3

September 22, 2019

For skateboarders, surfers and board-riding enthusiasts, Skate the Cape is back at Cape Henlopen State Park for the seventh time from Friday to Sunday, Nov. 1 to 3.

Riders from all over the East Coast, and even California and Colorado come to this event because of the fun competitions, positive vibes and beautiful historic venue. Timmy B and Patty C will provide live musical entertainment, and there will be cash prizes for the Downhill Race and Pro Invitational Slide Jam.

"I grew up learning to longboard and surf at Cape Henlopen; it's still one of my favorite places to ride and I am so stoked to be coming back to host this event,” said Rob Wheeler, event host and owner of Faceplant Boardriders.

Friday will be a surf day. Participants can set up camp at the Faceplant VIP campsite in Cape Henlopen and then head to Herring Point for a surf session. Handboards, surfboards and skimboards will be available to demo. Boarders only need to bring their own wetsuits.

Saturday starts off with downhill racing when four riders race from the top of the Great Dune Lookout, around the 100-degree right turn and down the bike path to the finish. Spectators can set up chairs on the edge of the turn and enjoy the show. Music will be playing, and food will be available from Taco Reho food truck.

Next up is the old-school slalom race where riders go head to head as they weave in and out of cones while picking up speed downhill. This event is a tribute to the roots of skateboarding and a rider favorite.

The last event Saturday is the 2.9-mile Enduro Push Race, where all the riders race at once around the entire bike loop of Cape Henlopen State Park. Riders will face uphills, downhills, sand traps, pine needles and deadly road cracks.

Sunday is freestyle day, starting with an amateur slide jam where beginners and novice riders can show their style with downhill slides and big airs. The winner of this slide jam will get a wildcard entry into the Pro Invitational Slide Jam where they could win cash.

The next event is the brand-new Flatland Freestyle Competiton. Organizers set up ramps and rails on the top flat section of the hill, and riders have a 30-minute jam session to impress the crowd and judges with their fancy footwork. This event will be a lot of fun to watch. Zogg’s bar food truck will be on site.

Next up will be the main event, the Pro Invitational Slide Jam. Riders from all over the U.S. are invited to this event because of their past performances at Faceplant Boardriders events. These guys are going to light up the hill with huge slide, big airs and tons of style.

"I am so pumped for the Pro Invitational Slide Jam because it's the first of its kind! I am bringing the best slide jam longboarders to a great venue and in a fun, laid-back jam session format that will promote great riding. A cash prize always help motivate them, too,” said Wheeler.
