Skim USA hosts South Side Shoot Out contest
Skim USA, the world's largest association of amateur and professional skimboarders, along with Alley-Oop Skim, announces the 2011 South Side Shoot Out skimboarding contest will be held Saturday-Sunday, June 4-5, at the south side of Indian River Inlet at Delaware Seashore State Park.
The Shoot Out, now in its eighth year, is the fourth stop of the Zap Pro/Am Skimboarding Tour and the second stop of the professional United Skim Tour. This event has become known for its excellent wave quality and high level of competition, and it serves as a kickoff to the summer skimboarding season in Delaware.
The competition is open to skimmers of all ages and ability levels from the Mini Division representing children age 8 and under all the way up to the Senior Grandmasters representing some crazy old men who cling to youth and the sport of skimboarding. There are also two female divisions and a professional division, which are some of the most exciting for spectators to watch. Many pros travel from around the country to make this event and get a taste of the Delaware shore break, which offers some of the best skim conditions in the world.
Competitors can pick up entry forms at the Alley-Oop Skim Shop in Dewey Beach or online at skimusa.org or alleyoopskim.com. The entry fee is $25 for amateurs and $75 for professionals. Competitors must be members of Skim USA to compete. Membership carries a yearly fee of $15 that benefits the Skim USA organization and its scholarship fund for aspiring student skimmers.
The Skim USA Scholarship Program offers student skimmers who desire to continue their education beyond the secondary level scholarship grants based upon the education performance and citizenship rather than athletic prowess. Skim USA will present its 2011 Scholarship Awards during this year’s event.
