Smail memorial scholarship goes to Jessica Gardner

September 14, 2020

In a ceremony held Aug. 20 at the Lewes Public Library, Jessica Gardner received the 2020 Christopher J. Smail Memorial Scholarship.

Gardner graduated Cape Henlopen High School in May 2020, and is now attending the University of Delaware. She is a current Lewes library page, a member of C.A.P.E. for Tomorrow – Compassion for Animals and Protecting the Environment, a member of the National Honor Society and vice president of Cape's International Thespian Society troupe.

The Christopher J. Smail Memorial Scholarship is a one-time, $1,000 grant designed to encourage higher education study by helping to defray college expenses. Karen Smail, the mother of Christopher Smail, a 2010 Cape Henlopen High School graduate, former Lewes library page and scholarship recipient, presented Gardner with the award. The scholarship was renamed in Christopher’s honor after he died in an automobile crash in November 2011.
