Several students from Beacon Middle School joined more than 100 students from across the state for Delaware's 22nd annual Junior Solar Sprint competition April 14.
The Delaware Technology Student Association, partnering with the state Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control's Division of Energy & Climate, challenged middle school students to design model cars powered by solar panels.
“It's a great hands-on, minds-on activity that is STEM related,” said Beacon team advisor and technical education teacher Don Schlater. “It keeps the students engaged and dedicated.”
The competition, held at the Delaware State Fairgrounds in Harrington, included recognition for speed as well as engineering and creative design for the top five cars.
While the Beacon students did not place in this year's competition, Beacon Middle School has earned top prizes in previous competitions and has participated in 21 of the 22 years of the event, Schlater said.
“It's really enjoyable and it's a good experience,” said Beacon student Krista Brittingham. “You learn how to work as a team and use different tools. And to not give up.”
Other participating schools included Milford Central Academy, Postlethwait Middle School, Holy Cross Middle School, Gauger-Cobbs Middle School, H.B. DuPont Middle School, Sanford School and Springer Middle School.
The top five teams in timed races were: Sanford School earning first and second place; Holy Cross Middle School placing third; and Springer Middle School taking home fourth and fifth place. The top five teams in design were: Spring Middle School in first and second place; Holy Cross Middle School placing third; H.B. DuPont Middle School earning fourth; and Postlethwait Middle School in fifth place.
