Son of a Beach rugby tournament heats up Hudson Fields

17 teams participate in annual event

Nine men’s teams and eight women’s squads scrummed, grubber kicked, tackled, chicken-winged and made scissor moves during the fourth annual Son of a Beach rugby tournament May 20 at Hudson Fields in Milton.

Men’s teams competing were Happy Valley, Hibernians, Delmarva, Prince William, Pax River, Reading, Northeast Philly Irish and the Media Rugby Club. Men’s play consisted of the Yogi Bear Division, Father Abraham Division and the Marrying Kind Division.

Women’s clubs were Phoenixville, Lehigh Valley, South Jersey Devils, Northeast Philly Irish, Chesapeake, Pax River, Lancaster, and the Nuts and Jugs Club. Women’s play consisted of the Barnacle Bill and Chicago Divisions.

Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
