Southern Delaware Therapeutic Riding hires executive director
In its 35 years of operation, the Southern Delaware Therapeutic Riding organization has never had an executive director. But it does now.
Jo Allegro-Smith was recently hired as executive director of the Milton-area nonprofit that offers therapeutic horseback riding for children and adults with disabilities.
“I’m excited to be a part of this great organization. I have been extremely impressed with the mission of SDTR and the people involved with this,” Allegro-Smith said. “As its first executive director, I hope that I can bring a unique perspective and help to further advance the goals of SDTR.”
Board member Linda Berdine said Allegro-Smith is a welcome addition to the facility that sits on Route 5 between Harbeson and Milton.
An indoor riding ring with a wheelchair-accessible entrance and seating area allows participants to get ready for their sessions, and offers a view for their families or helpers to watch the ring activity.
Eight horses and four certified instructors provide therapeutic riding for about 75 participants, Berdine said. SDTR offers programs for Sussex Consortium, Howard T. Ennis, Operation SEAs the Day and the Children’s Beach House.
About 100 volunteers are the real backbone of the operation, Berdine said.
“There are many who bring a high level of commitment and are essential to helping SDTR continue to serve their participants,” she said. “In fact, SDTR wouldn’t be where it is today without the tremendous group of volunteers who have been associated with SDTR over the years.”
