Speed camera money should go toward cleaning up litter

January 30, 2026

We want to thank the folks who wrote letters regarding the speed camera on Route 1 near Red Mill Pond. We support the speed camera, and maybe we need more. We agree we need to follow the money and that we as Delawareans have the right to know where the money generated from the speeding tickets is going.

Additionally, I saw the report from DelDOT identifying all the trash they picked up in 2025. This has been going on for years. We do have small signs on the roads that say “Keep DE litter-free,” but you cannot see the littering fines, as the print is so small. We have seen trucks picking up litter in Kent and New Castle counties, but not in Sussex County. Maybe some of the money generated from the speeding fines can be used to hire a company to pick up trash in Sussex County? Better yet, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result, so maybe we should educate our residents and visitors about Delaware's laws for littering and dumping. If the littering and dumping continues, then we need to hold those who are littering and dumping accountable by severely fining them.
