Starboard tent blown into street

December 31, 2025

Blustery conditions Dec. 29 caused one of the large outdoor tents at The Starboard in Dewey Beach to blow into the shoulder of Route 1, creating temporary traffic delays for folks heading south through the town that evening.

The tent reportedly blew over with one big gust around 5 p.m. Dewey Beach Police Department officers blocked the area off while a group of five to six Starboard employees disassembled and removed the structure, clearing the scene by about 5:30.

“It’s been re-set up and anchored well,” said The Starboard owner Steve “Monty” Montgomery. “Won’t happen in the future, as a permanent structure is being constructed starting Monday, [Jan. 5].”

It was one of The Starboard’s extra tents, which Montgomery said they used on New Year’s Eve for a coat check. Employees were in the process of setting it up earlier that day and had it secured with four water barrels.

Wind gusts reached 55 mph that evening, according to the National Weather Service.
