Stuart Kingston Gallery’s final auction set Feb. 26
Aficionados of original artwork, estate jewelry and period furniture will have one last chance to claim a treasure at Stuart Kingston Gallery’s final auction, set for Saturday, Feb. 26.
In November, Stuart Kingston President Mauria Stein announced plans to discontinue selling fine rugs and move her business to Coastal Highway after 92 years in Rehoboth.
“I am excited and very sad about my final auction,” Stein said. “We have been holding auctions at our Boardwalk location since 1930, so this is going to be very bittersweet.”
A wide range of collectibles will be available, including fur coats from the 1950s, arts and crafts, American Renaissance Revival mirrors and wardrobes, footballs autographed by Herschel Walker and Joe Flacco, and an uncorrected first proof of the 1998 worldwide bestseller “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” Stein said.
“We have a wonderful collection of 19th century fine American antiques, including tall case clocks and a federal mahogany chest of drawers,” Stein said. “This auction has a terrific collection of art that belonged to Mervin Jules. Mr. Jules’ art hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York. We also have a huge collection of 19th century and European art, including many lovely landscapes and seascapes.”
Stein said she is honored to have available a painting by important Delaware artist Edward Loper Sr.
“As always, we have a great selection of jewelry, Waterford crystal, Asian furniture and porcelain, along with wonderful jade and bronze statuary,” she said.
Since 1930, the Stein family has operated the Stuart Kingston Gallery auction house and antique showroom on the north end of the Boardwalk near the Henlopen Hotel.
Stuart Kingston’s auctions were particularly popular during the 1950s, when founder Maurice Stein and business partner Sydney Cohan conducted weekly events on the Boardwalk; the practice continued until the late 1970s.
Doors will open at 8:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 26, and the auction begins at 9:30 a.m. To learn more, call 302-227-2524 or go to stuartkingston.com.
