Tobacco cessation workshops offered
May 17, 2011

Students in the First Sate Community Action Agency’s Richard Allen After School Program were recognized for their completion of the “Too Smart to Start” program at a ceremony at Georgetown Elementary School May 12. Twenty-five students ages 8-14 received certificates of completion and gift cards for their participation in the “Too Smart to Start” Tobacco Cessation Program during the 2010-11 academic year.

Students participated in anti-tobacco workshops educating them on the harmful and widespread effects of tobacco and second-hand smoke in efforts to prevent youth from using tobacco products.   Students also participated in various community events, including a cigarette butt community cleanup in commemoration of Kick Butts Day, a national initiative promoting tobacco-free youth.

As a result of the program, student’s knowledge and awareness of harmful tobacco use increased 75 percent as measured through pre- and post-assessments. The “Too Smart to Start” Tobacco Cessation Program is made possible through the Delaware Division of Public Health’s Tobacco Prevention Community Contract.  Funding for the Contract is provided by the Delaware Health Fund and managed by the American Lung Association of Delaware.
