Sunday morning Paradise Grill 5K is Pot-Nets at its best

Sewell and Wiley win titles
September 24, 2024

The usual crowd didn’t shuffle into Paradise Grill at 10 a.m. on a Sunday morning for the ninth annual Stop, Drop and Run 5K Run/Walk.

"This is the only race that branches off so runners can choose two different courses,” said Race Director Tim Bamforth. “We had 133 finishers, but it's not the usual crew of runners. People come out to support the Indian River Volunteer Fire Company.”

Tides were running high Sept. 22, but it was slack during the race. Afterward, water was lapping over some spots on the course.

Mike Sewell, 55, was the overall winner in 20:20. Melissa Wiley, 38, was first woman and second overall in 20:35.

Sean O’Grady, 43, a basketball coach at Beacon Middle School, had his best finish of the racing season, placing third in 21:02 and winning the male masters title.

Jamie Hicks, 46, won the female masters race in 23:36. Robert Hicks, 47, won the 40-49 male age group in 23:19.

Mary Kessler, 75, won the female 70-and-over age group in 26:01. William Oliver, 72, won the male 70-and-over age group in 26:19.

The 17th annual Dogfish Dash 3.8-mile run is set for Sunday, Sept. 29, starting at 9 a.m. at the Dogfish Head Brewery in Milton.
