Sussex Academy boys win Henlopen Conference Championship

The Henlopen Conference Swim Championships were held Feb. 13 at the Sussex Academy Aquatic Center. When the ripples subsided, the Sussex Academy boys and Caesar Rodney girls took home conference titles.
Cape took the regular-season Northern Division championship for the boys, while the CR girls also earned a regular-season trophy. Sussex Academy won the Southern Division title for boys and girls for the fifth straight year.
The Vince Morris Outstanding Boys Swimmer Award went to Caesar Rodney’s Ryan Woodzall, who broke the 500 freestyle record with a time of 4:46.42. His teammate Danielle Stewart garnered the girls’ award after breaking the 500 free record with a time of 5:13.56.
The Henlopen Conference girls’ Coach of the Year Award was presented to Sussex Academy’s Tom Martiner, while the boys’ Coach of the Year Award was presented to Indian River’s Colin Crandell.

The DIAA State Championships will be hosted by the Sussex Academy Aquatics Center Saturday, Feb. 27, for the girls’ competition and Sunday, Feb. 28, for the boys’ competition.


















Dan has worked for the Cape Gazette for more than 30 years as a photographer and reporter, covering high school sports and happenings around eastern Sussex County. He won a photography award from the National Newspaper Association, and numerous awards from the Maryland, Delaware, D.C. Press Association. A Delaware native, Dan graduated from Cape in 1972 and returned as a teacher and coach in the 1980s. He retired from the classroom in 2016. He was inducted into Cape High’s Legends Stadium in 2016. In his spare time, Dan enjoys spending time with his wife, two sons, grandchildren and dogs.
