To honor and welcome the spirits of deceased loved ones, members of Sussex Academy’s World Language Honor Society created an ofrenda, following a tradition deeply rooted in Mexican culture.
Senior Leni Kuska said an ofrenda is a traditional altar built to celebrate Día de los Muertos, the Day of the Dead.
“The ofrenda is a way to remember and honor those who have passed, and World Language Honor Society wanted to spread awareness of this famous holiday,” Leni said.
Spanish teacher Nico Caceres advises the World Language Honor Society, and students took this opportunity to honor his ancestors.
“The photos on the ofrenda are family and friends of Señor Caceres that passed away, and there are mementos such as the scissors and yardstick from Señor's grandfather,” Leni said. “The marigold flowers were all student made and are traditionally used to decorate during Day of the Dead, as their bright petals represent the sun.”
