Sussex Academy welcomes History Book Festival authors
Authors Sam Kean and Joseph Lee visited Sussex Academy Sept. 26 prior to their participation in the ninth annual History Book Festival in Lewes.
A best-selling author of popular science titles, Kean spoke with middle school students about his books, including “The Disappearing Spoon.” He also shared fascinating science stories along with artifacts such as a fish from the grocery store he had mummified at home.
Award-winning author Joseph Lee visited Dr. Andie Kirtley’s classroom to discuss the process of writing and his new book, “Nothing More of the Land,” a personal exploration of Indigenous identity and the challenges facing Indigenous people around the world.
In conjunction with the author visits, the History Book Festival donated sets of their books for Sussex Academy classrooms and the library.
"The History Book Festival partnership allows my students the unique experience of meeting the person behind the book, and to better understand the purpose behind the writing,” Kirtley said. “Being able to ask the author their questions after reading the text and to hear authentic responses is an amazing experience. We are so lucky to have this opportunity."
