Sussex County students learn about government

Optimist Club sponsors trip to Georgetown on Youth Appreciation Day

High school students interested in political science, government, criminology and law experienced local government in action during an April 26 visit to the county seat.

Sponsored by the Optimist Club of Sussex County, the Youth Appreciation Day trip brought students to Georgetown to meet Family Court Judge Peter Jones, Sussex County Council members and other officials.

Before council’s weekly meeting, students met with Council President Michael Vincent, Vice President Doug Hudson, Councilmen John Rieley and Mark Schaeffer, County Administrator Todd Lawson, County Attorney Everett Moore and County Finance Director Gina Jennings.

After lunch at Caruso’s, students spent the afternoon watching trials in the Court of Common Pleas.

County students participating included Emma Byrnes, Delmar; Sarah Lopatofsky, Delmar; DJovens Moise, Laurel; Antoinette Collick, Laurel; Aubrey Lynch, Milford; Matthew Sacks, Milford; Natalie Carter, Seaford; Lauren Dennis, Sussex Central; Nacesseca Cherazard, Sussex Tech; Sydney Price, Sussex Tech; Christina Joseph, Sussex Tech; and Olivia Farro, Sussex Tech.
