Sussex Tech district superintendent to retire

April 13, 2026

The Sussex County Vocational Technical School District announced the upcoming retirement of Superintendent Dr. Kevin E. Carson, effective Monday, Aug. 1, following seven years of dedicated leadership and service to the district.

Carson rejoined the Sussex Tech school district in 2020, during the height of the COVID epidemic. He had previously served the district as assistant superintendent from 1988-97. He went on to serve as superintendent in the Woodbridge, Cape Henlopen and Seaford school districts.

Gary Brittingham, Sussex Tech board of education president, said, “Dr. Carson has played a pivotal role in reinventing and advancing the district’s mission and vision. Under his leadership, the district has undergone significant improvements in curriculum development, organizational structure and financial management, helping to better serve Sussex County students in both the day and adult education programs. Dr. Carson has also been instrumental in securing the funding, planning and development of the new Sussex Technical High School.”

Although retiring from his role as superintendent, Carson will continue to support the district, assisting with the ongoing construction of the new high school, which is currently scheduled for completion in September 2027.

District team members extend their sincere appreciation to Carson for his dedication and lasting contributions to the district, and they look forward to a continued working relationship during the construction phase of the new high school.

The district’s superintendent position will be posted in the coming weeks.

Sussex Technical High School is a public school that prepares Sussex County students for their future success in workforce environments, higher education and the military.
