After a busted pipe flooded the Dewey Beach Club with water and ceiling debris this past winter, owner Jeff Treacy said it never crossed his mind that he wouldn’t reopen.
“No,” he replied matter-of-factly in a Feb. 28 email. “Why would it?”
Instead, Treacy is using the needed remodeling as an opportunity to change the restaurant’s atmosphere and menu. Gone is the Dewey Beach Club. When the restaurant reopens in March, it will be known as MezCali Taquería y Mezcal Bar.
“We will be the first mezcal bar in Delaware,” he said of the California-inspired restaurant. “We were already a tequila/mezcal bar, and we had tacos, but I never really felt that the name the Dewey Beach Club represented what we were.”
Treacy said the new menu will have some of the popular items from last year, but there will also be a lot of new items with Mexican influences.
Months from beginning his third summer season as a Dewey Beach restaurant owner, Treacy said he’s looking forward to building on last year’s strong finish. Being the last stop in Dewey has presented some challenges, he said, but the restaurant has been moving in the right direction and the changes will be great for the town.
Treacy said construction is moving along and he is hoping to be open no later than Wednesday, March 21, but is pushing for Thursday, March 15.
MezCali Taquería y Mezcal Bar is located at 1205 Coastal Highway. The phone number is 302-260-9017.
