Two items arrived in my inbox this week. One was a letter to Delaware beach property owners encouraging them to oppose the offshore wind project underway off the Delaware coast. (This letter was from “SaveOurBeachView” with data and analytics provided by the Caesar Rodney Institute, a Koch Brothers/fossil fuel funded group.)
The second item was a lead story in all the news outlets. The Washington Post’s headline was: “In bleak report, U.N. says drastic action is only way to avoid worst effects of climate change” followed by a quote from a top official, “We need to catch up on the years in which we procrastinated.”
The first article asks me to limit offshore power generation to protect my beach view. I think about walking across the sand on a hot day and how the sand burns by feet and I have to run to get to the cooler sand closer to the ocean. How do I want to protect that experience?
The second item is a clear call to limit fossil fuel emissions now. Again I think about trying to walk across the beach when the sand and the entire beach is just too hot to walk or sit on. I recall that the past July was the hottest month in our planet’s recorded history.
Looking at these two inbox items, I wonder, is it better to protect my beach view by blocking offshore wind turbines, or better to protect my beach from the crisis of climate change by allowing renewable power generation?
I invite your readers to voice their opinion to elected officials.
