As a retired federal employee, I continue to be active with the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association that advocates for active and retired federal employees on workplace issues and benefits. In Delaware, we are lucky to have five very active chapters of NARFE that work to support federal employees – active and retired. We have chapters in Wilmington, Newark, Dover, coastal Sussex County and western Sussex County.
In this current environment, people look to demean and attack public-sector employees without understanding that many of the services we enjoy are provided by public-sector and federal employees without regard to political views. These individuals inspect our food, teach children, deliver mail, pick up our trash, provide for safety in many areas and collectively provide a positive impact on daily living.
Retired federal employees continue to volunteer in our community in many roles. NARFE has also taken on Alzheimer’s research as a national charity, and many of our chapters also support other local community causes.
In this time when public-sector employees are under unfair attack, we need to continue to protect public-sector and federal employees from the many hostile acts that are unwarranted.
Having just finished Public Service Recognition Week in early May, I ask that you thank the public servants that support all 24-7 and have sworn an oath of service and continue to do service.
If you are an active or retired federal employee, look at www.narfe.org and join us.
If interested in a Delaware-based chapter, go to www.narfe-de.org. Like other senior service groups, there are many benefits of joining.
If not a federal employee, look at the Partnership for Public Service website on what public service means to all and how it impacts everyone.
I want to thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts. As a member of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association, these views are my personal views alone.
