I want to commend the Gazette for publishing reader letters. In these difficult times it’s important that freedom of speech is meant to protect the minority view, the less-popular view, the view that makes us less comfortable to consider.
Especially today, the idea that national news isn’t local seems to be misplaced. Rehoboth will become the Nation’s Summer Capital as the Bidens spend their time here over the next four years. And we also can’t forget how national news has emanated from our region. One Delawarean has been arrested related to the incident at the Capitol, another arrested in the attempted abduction of the Michigan governor. Christine Blasey-Ford started her attack on now-Justice Kavanaugh on the Rehoboth beaches and Christine O’Donnell’s Senate run several years ago contributed to the drama surrounding the passage of the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare).
Even today the Progressive Movement and out-of-state money have made significant inroads into state politics which will further divide the above and below the canal political schism that many newbies to the region may not be familiar with. Above the canal is moving further left while below the canal is historically right-leaning. National issues such as the $15 minimum wage (which may make business impossible for small businesses struggling with COVID) and the Electoral College (which was a negotiated position to bring small states like Delaware into the Constitution) are important to us all, and will not be covered by any other media source.
In the end, we may not like what’s published, but if it constructively addresses issues of interest it deserves to be published.
The Gazette is providing an invaluable service, and I thank them for doing so.
