Tornado rips through Sussex

National Weather Service confirms twister hit Sussex County
April 15, 2019

A tornado ripped through homes, businesses and farms north of Laurel about 3:45 a.m., April 15, the National Weather Service has confirmed. Power was out to thousands of residents in the area and Laurel schools were closed. Seaford schools were on a two-hour delay, while power went out later in the morning, forcing Sussex Technical High School to end classes early.

At least 12 roads in Sussex County were closed as of noon, due to downed power lines or trees. Crews from Delmarva Power and Delaware Electric Cooperative were still actively working to restore electricity. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch and tornado warning, urging residents to take cover, just after 3 a.m. 

The tornado also hit an area east of Seaford near Concord causing damage to farms and homes, especially in the Bakers Mill Road area.
