May 31, 2013

The 20th annual Masser 5 Miler starting at Cape Henlopen High School and running through the expensive real estate of Lewes attracted 277 runners ages 8 to 81.

The good news about a five miler is it's not metric, so everyone can relate to the times which were impressive on a perfect morning for running a cool breeze and low humidity.

Enos Benbow, 32, the Georgetown Jamaican and Salisbury University graduate, won the race in 28:31 followed by Dylan Verrator, 17, 28:41; Matt Dunn, 33, 28:52; Mike Sewell, 43, 29:37; and Chad Ahalt, 34, 29:46.

Karen Ziga of Haverford, 28, the first woman to finish, ran 31:28 followed by Cindy Conant, 52, in 31:53. Bridget Danner, 27,  of Rehoboth Beach was third in 32:48.

Some notable performances from locally connected runners included Luke Burton, 8 years old, running 46:35; John Best, age 12, 35:28; and D.J. Farren, 10, 35:35.

Sonny Landis, 17,  of Selbyville won his age group in 30:35.

Brian Riggin, 24, a first team all-state defense selection in lacrosse for Cape and 215-pound state champion wrestler, won his age group in 37:05; but if he were 10, he’d have been third.

Anthony Romano, 28, who never ran at Cape, won the 25 to 29 age group in 32:07 followed by Corey Schab, 25, who ran 32:31. Corey was an all-state midfielder for Cape on a state championship lacrosse team.

Joel Simon, 42, a Cape Henlopen High School math teacher, ran 46:56.

Phil Wilson, 53, a front line runner of Cape’s 1977 cross country and 1978 spring track state championship teams, ran 33:57. Rusty LePorte, 59, of Lewes ran 36:19.

Rick Poppleton, 60, of Reboboth running in and winning his new age group, clocked a 34:24.

Dr. Lee Masser, 77, after whom the race was named 20 years ago, has run them all. Masser ran 56:55. Doc runs over 100 races a year.

Sarah White, 27, a former Cape goalie in field hockey and lacrosse who has become a fitness animal, won her age group in 34:11.

JoAnn Szczepkowski, 67 a retired teacher living in Rehoboth, continued to dominate her age group, running 40:47.
