130 runners enjoy perfect racing weather
September 15, 2020

The 44th annual Gary P. Lister Bottle & Cork 5K featuring real people in real time attracted 131 runners to Dewey Beach Sept. 12. The fall-like weather was chilled out and the top 13 runners, all male, broke the 20-minute barrier.

Schuyler Reed, 20, a member of the University of Delaware cross country coed club team, was the overall winner in 16:36, holding off Colten Morris, 18, who ran 16:52. Redd set a fast pace of 4:53 at the mile mark.

Joey Andrisani, 38, was third in 17:15, followed by Ryan Baker, 15, in 17:46 and Kyle Owino, 19, in 17:58.

Steve Koch, 59, of Reading, Pa., was the overall masters winner in 18:54.

Bethany Wright, 25, a former runner at Sussex Tech and Misericordia College, was the overall women’s winner in 20:04. Joining Bethany on the leaderboard were Michele Karsnitz, 35, in 20:53; Mary Rice, 45, first masters, in 23:04; Jessica Collier, 32, in 23:23; and Allison Einig, 20, in 24:00.

Male age-group winners included Mark Baker, 48 (45-49), 21:26; Mike Marciano, 31 (30-34), 18:52; Matt Sparacino, 42 (40-44), 19:01; Kam Yee, 50 (50-54), 20:43; Rick Poppleton, 67 (65-69), 22:44; Woody Disharoon, 71 (70-74), 28:09; Paul Kiefer, 80 (80 and over), 45:29.

Female age-group winners included Alyssa Schwartz, 40 (40-44), 30:45 and Linda Schwartz Chi, 55 (55-59), 26:49.

Oddly enough, on a weekend when most tourists appear to have cleared out, only 22 percent of the field of 130 runners were people claiming Sussex County residence.
