Union of Body, Mind and Soul offers mental health and wellness services

Center practitioners provide specialized holistic therapies
May 2, 2018

A team of mental health and wellness experts has created a peaceful space that promotes healing and support not just for clients but for each other as well.

Union of Body, Mind and Soul opened at 306 Union St. in Milton April 1, offering traditional and alternative treatment modalities from three practitioners with complementary styles and methods.

“I knew these ladies and their backgrounds, and asked them to join me on this journey of interconnectedness with the mind, body and spirit,” said Susan Woodward, a licensed clinical social worker and somatic experiencing practitioner.

Woodward’s like-minded clinicians are Elizabeth Sanchez, a certified life coach, energy healer, Reiki practitioner and business consultant; and Cate Evans, a licensed professional counselor of mental health. Together, the three practitioners offer psychotherapy, life coaching, bodywork, mindful meditation groups and workshops in a comfortable, home-like setting where shoes are optional.

Each clinician provides specialized therapies in the antebellum home, which was recently renovated and decorated to welcome clients. Exterior plans call for a backyard labyrinth and yoga space.

“We all support each other and have different gifts, and even share clients to see what works best for them,” Evans said. “For example, Elizabeth’s niche is supporting women in business.”

Sanchez uses a holistic approach to help her clients achieve goals - whether that includes growing a business, creating healthy relationships or getting a better job.

“People want to move forward to achieve goals, so we work to remove the obstacles and find solutions,” she said.

To help give clients support and guidance, Sanchez incorporates energy found in crystals and intuitive readings through angel cards, which are similar to tarot cards.

“Angel cards give confirmation to people who rely on a higher power for support and help them connect with their intuition to give them the tools they need to go out into life without me, knowing they’re never alone. They have their intuition for backup,” she said.

A somatic therapist, Woodward does ancestral work and treats clients with post traumatic stress disorder and prenatal, birth and developmental trauma. Somatic therapy, a holistic treatment, studies the relationship between the mind and body in regard to past trauma to recognize and release tension caused by the traumatic event.

“The body remembers all of our experiences that did happen or didn’t get the chance to happen, and there can be ‘stuck’ patterns in the body,” she said.

Someone recently in a car accident may have chronic neck pain or tension. Woodward will use a hands-on approach to release the tension by unwinding and orienting the somatic memory pressing on the nerves.

“Health is underneath the layers,” she said. “We hold onto emotional stuff that holds us back, and everyday life adds layers to it. We work on uncovering the layers and getting to the health.”

Evans uses eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy to treat PTSD, general anxiety, depression, panic disorders, phobias and unresolved grief. She said this therapy stimulates the brain’s natural healing capacity by integrating both hemispheres of the brain, allowing them to communicate and move through the trauma.

“Clients often report a release of tension like a weight has been lifted,” Evans said.

Beginning May 2, Union of Body, Mind and Soul will offer weekly Wednesday meditation at the center.

“It’s our dream to be in a small community,” Woodward said. “We’re constantly doing self-care and supporting each other on a constant journey of wellness.”

Adults over age 18 are welcome and referrals are not required. Evans and Woodward accept some insurances and private pay; Sanchez accepts private pay.
