UPDATE: Gas leak at Lewes Senior Activity Center under repair

Employees with Amerigas are on the scene of a gas leak discovered about 9:09 a.m., April 16, at the Lewes Senior Activity Center on Janice Road near Lewes. Crews are emptying a propane tank on the site, after a pipe was compromised during on-site work. The gas company is also on the scene, and all nearby residents are safe.

A controlled burn to completely empty the tank will take place about 2 p.m. today and will last about one hour. Fire department spokesman Glenn Marshall said the gas will be under pressure. Flames may shoot into the air as high as 20 feet and will likely be visible from the Nassau bridge, Marshall said, but safety precautions will be in place.
