UUSD environmental education sessions to be held Oct. 21, 28

Preregistration is required
October 9, 2019

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware and Mac Goekler will conduct a two-session course called Carbon, The Life Cycle: Saving our Environment to be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Mondays, Oct. 21 and 28, at 30486 Lewes-Georgetown Highway, Lewes.

The course will address how to bring out-of-control global warming back to a stable course. It will explore how the earth’s climate has changed over time, how climate scientists believe the current mass extinction was created, and what must be done to bring natural forces back into harmony. Complicated equations and jargon will not be used, and a science background is not required.

Session 1: Nature’s Way from 4 Billion BCE to 8000 BCE will be a walk through time and how the carbon cycle has changed as life has changed. It will include a close look at how nature has or has not adjusted to environmental changes, especially with regard to mass extinctions. The carbon cycle is used as a descriptor, since life on earth is carbon-based. This cycle illustrates how nature has evolved and adjusted to climatic changes and provides indicators as to what is needed now.

Session 2:  Human Intervention, 8000 BCE to the Present includes discussion about what actions must occur to curtail the current climate change and a close look at technology that can bring back a stable path of peaceful coexistence with nature. The course will address what individuals, churches, small and large government entities, etc. can do.

Mac Goekler, course presenter, said, “We can bring nature and the climate back to stasis, but it will require efforts on all fronts.  The technical solutions exist; our political leaders are the hurdle. We must find a way to stop this madness.”

Goekler holds a bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from the University of Arizona in Tucson. He is a retired manufacturing executive and holds five U.S. patents. Goekler is co-chair of UUSD’s Social and Environmental Justice Committee, and holds other leadership positions in the congregation. He is also active in nonprofit organizations including Unitarian Universalists for Alternatives to the Death Penalty and the UU Peace Ministry Network.

A onetime $10 donation is requested at the first session. Preregistration is required for this course; email AdultEdCarbon@uussd.org.

UUSD is a welcoming and progressive spiritual community. Proceeds from the course will support UUSD’s mission to nurture spiritual growth, embrace diversity, work for justice, and strive for a loving world. For directions and information about UUSD, go to www.uussd.org.
