UUSD to host mindful communication workshop Feb. 23

February 2, 2019

The Unitarian Universalists of Southern Delaware will host a mindful communication workshop from 1 to 3 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 23, at 30486 Lewes-Georgetown Highway, Lewes. Dr. Doris Lauckner, a licensed psychologist and licensed professional counselor of mental health, will facilitate.

Participants will learn how mindfulness practices can enhance their communications and relationships with others. The workshop is open to the public.

Lauckner said, “Being mindful means being fully present and aware in a nonjudgmental and nonreactive manner. Mindfulness can help you to live your life more fully. Communication is at the heart of how we relate to and understand each other, and is at the basis of our living and working together. Mindful communication establishes a listening presence to oneself and to others. Mindfulness is applied to both listening and speaking. It can provide great insights into our own reactions and intentions, as well as the effects or consequences of our speech. Mindful communication provides the opportunity for others to feel heard and respected. It can lead to the resolution of conflicts and speaking in a skillful manner that creates positive changes.”

Lauckner received her PhD in counseling psychology at Seton Hall University where she specialized in health psychology. She has been practicing psychology and counseling for the past 30 years.

At present, Lauckner is director of the clinical mental health counseling program at Wilmington University, where she has been an educator for the past 18 years. In addition to her professional interests in mental health and education, Lauckner has an avid interest in Buddhism and mindfulness practices. She was trained in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction by Jon Kabat-Zinn and Saki Santorelli.

Lauckner herself has a meditation practice and has attended numerous meditation retreats. She has been providing workshops in mindfulness and meditation for the past several years.

A $10 donation is requested for the workshop. Preregistration is not required. Proceeds will support UUSD’s mission to nurture spiritual growth, embrace diversity, work for justice and strive for a loving world.
