UUSD's discussion series on Pope Francis’ Laudato Si starts Oct. 22 in Lewes
Dr. Len Bowman will moderate a four-week discussion series from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Thursdays, Oct. 22 to Nov. 12. The discussions will center on Pope Francis’ Laudato Si, an open letter “on care for our common home.” The discussions will be held at the new UUSD church at 30486 Georgetown-Lewes Highway, Route. 9, Lewes. Advance registration is not required. A one-time $10 donation is requested for the course.
This discussion series will focus on ethics, a rational perspective open to people with diverse points of view. Since the message of Laudato Si is couched in terms that strongly reflect the pope’s Catholic context, this discussion series may be particularly helpful for people outside that context to hear and understand the message of the letter. The course content will examine the ecological crisis and its connection to global injustice, the nature of ethical reasoning and dialog, Pope Francis’ view that the root of the present crisis is “the technocratic paradigm” and Pope Francis’ call for an “integral ecology” to respond to the challenge.
Bowman, a member of the UUSD congregation, holds a PhD in theology from Fordham University. He has taught courses in ethics for over 30 years, and is currently teaching Ethics for a Multicultural World for the master of liberal arts program of Johns Hopkins University.
UUSD is a vibrant and welcoming progressive spiritual community with a faith rooted in love and justice.
