When the locals – and smart vacationers - come out to play
The shoulder season officially begins this weekend, but there’s still a lot going on. The Sea Witch, Jazz and Film Festivals, Sidewalk Sale, Buddy Walk, Polar Bear Plunge and the Christmas tree lighting and parade are just a few things that happen when most vacationers aren’t looking. And those of you who visit Rehoboth Beach during that relaxed time get to join us in a cherished tradition: cheap eats!
Goodness knows we locals behaved ourselves all summer. We touched the brakes for J-walkers, drove circuitous routes to avoid sobriety checkpoints, and quietly cursed texting drivers as they bounced across median strips (the operative word here being, “quietly”).
We honked politely at those (still) baffled by the Rehoboth Avenue roundabout, and took out second mortgages in quarters to feed hungry meters. We even (well, sometimes) waited in line at our favorite restaurants. Our reward (and yours, if you’re clever enough to join us) will soon be good deals at local eateries. First and foremost are the ever-popular burger nights. Mondays at Frogg Pond, Pickled Pig Pub and Summer House (get the salmon burger!), Wednesdays at Kindle, Dogfish Head Tuesdays, and Irish Eyes (Lewes) on Wednesdays – to name a few. Most are around half-price and worth every penny.
Sushi lovers! Mark your calendars for Mondays at Cultured Pearl and Bento Box mania at Saketumi on Wednesdays, when substantial savings can be had on semi-transparent goodies wrapped in seaweed and rice. And don’t forget half price chicken parms on Tuesdays at Lupo Italian Kitchen and Mondays at Touch of Italy Rehoboth. Sandwiches are 50 percent off on Wednesdays at Arena’s downtown.
Indigo Indian Restaurant in Rehoboth plans to revive the off-season Sunday Indian buffet, along with their “Appy Hour” with half-price apps on Thursdays. And of course, all 10 SoDel Concepts restaurants rotate their specials throughout the week.
These and many more dining deals tend to repeat every year, but always give your favorite place a call to make sure. Discounts are what we do in the off-season, and most restaurants jump at the chance to treat residents and smart visitors to cut-rate vittles.
