Wilmington Children’s Chorus to perform in Lewes April 20

April 11, 2024

The sound of 50 young voices will reverberate throughout historic St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, Lewes, when an ensemble from the Wilmington Children’s Chorus performs at 2 p.m., Saturday, April 20, in the sanctuary at Second and Market streets, Lewes. Church doors will open 30 minutes before concert time.

As with other concerts sponsored by the church’s St. Cecilia Music Guild, this event is offered without charge. A freewill offering is welcome.

Known for its artistic merit, the organization’s five performing choirs, with singers ranging from age 8 to 18 at every level of learning, have appeared locally, across the country and internationally. At home, they collaborate frequently with the area’s top arts organizations, including the Delaware Symphony Orchestra, First State Ballet Theatre, OperaDelaware and Delaware Choral Arts.

Artistic Director Kimberly Doucette said musical selections will include well-known spirituals such as “There’s a Meetin’ Here Tonight” and “Walk Together Children”; Mandinka and Xhosa folk songs; “The Impossible Dream” from “Man of La Mancha”; “Hey Brother” as performed by Avicii; and “Excerpts from American Prophecy” with poetry by Brittny Ray Crowell and music by B.E. Boykin. The chorus will be joined by pianist David Christopher and Jonathan Whitney on percussion.

This event concludes the current concert season organized and presented by the St. Cecilia Music Guild, an outreach ministry of St. Peter’s that offers a mix of chamber, jazz and vocal concerts that have attracted thousands of people from southeastern Sussex County for the past six years. These quality music events are accessible to all with no admission charge, although freewill offerings are welcome.

“The Wilmington Children’s Chorus shares our hopes and dreams for the future as we explore what may lie ahead for us as a choir family, as individuals and as global citizens,” said Lianna Magerr, executive director. Dedicated to ensuring that all children, regardless of their socioeconomic status, have access to high-quality musical education, it is the only tuition-free community children’s chorus in the nation.

The concert will be webcast on St. Peter's YouTube and Facebook pages. To view remotely, go to stpeterslewes.org and click on media.
