March 17, 2026
A Washington, D.C., woman faces charges after police say she unlawfully used a credit card using a fake name to rent a room in Rehoboth Beach.
Police were notified March 14 of an identity fraud occurring in the area of Christian Street when a woman was trying to use a credit card to rent a room.
Police said Shataya R. Kennedy, 43, eventually used a second credit card to check into a room under the name of Monique Carter. When police contacted Kennedy in the room, police said, she told them her name was Monique Carter. However, once police determined her true identity, police said, they learned Kennedy had active warrants in three other states.
She was taken into custody without incident and charged with felony identity theft, unlawful use of a credit card, falsifying business records, criminal impersonation, theft of services, and fugitive from another state. Kennedy was committed to Delores J. Baylor Women’s Correctional Institution in default of $8,000 secured bond.
