Worcester students take part in community outreach

October 21, 2018

In between studies and summer jobs, Worcester Preparatory School students of all ages gave back to the community near and far.

Freshmen Aidan Hammond and Brice Richins, and seniors Liam Hammond and Cooper Richins collected and donated athletic balls during their 3rd Annual Furr Ball Drive to benefit the Worcester County Humane Society. Cooper and Liam created the Furr Ball Drive initiative in 10th grade after meeting with volunteers from the humane society and determining a treat the homeless animals would enjoy.

A group of 16 students traveled to West Virginia and Tennessee to help with home renovations. Accompanied by WPS teacher Allison Bescak and WPS librarian Tracy Polk, students performed work for the Appalachia Service Project, a Christian ministry that inspires hope and service through volunteer home repair in Central Appalachia.

In August, seniors Chloe Ruddo and Clare Demallie worked with teacher Linda Bragg to collect dozens of backpacks and school supplies from WPS soccer teammates, classmates and Quiet Storm to donate to students in need at Buckingham Elementary and Berlin Intermediate schools in Berlin, Md.

WPS 10th-graders Chipper Becker and Ryan Brafman volunteered May through August at Beebe Healthcare’s Summer Student Volunteer Program.

Juniors Quinn McColgan and Rylie Carey collected old WPS uniforms to donate to students at a Costa Rica school they had helped refurbish on a mission trip this summer.
