XI Sigma Chapter, Beta Sigma Phi celebrates Founder’s Day

May 8, 2023

The Xi Sigma Chapter of Beta Sigma Phi celebrated Founder’s Day April 29 with tea at Lavender Fields, Milton.

This annual celebration honors Beta Sigma Phi founder Walter W. Ross.

Clare Johnson, chapter president, announced the theme for the 2023-24 sorority year: Watch Beta Sigma Phi Grow and Bloom.

Beta Sigma Phi began in 1931, during the Great Depression. There was a need for an organization that could bring women together and expose them to a social, cultural and educational climate that was not available during these difficult times. Most important, there was a need for friendship and support from other women. Beta Sigma Phi was created from this need. It did not take long before Beta Sigma Phi was also helping others.

As many years have passed, the organization has become less formal, but the ideals are still the same.

Typical chapters still enjoy cultural programs, socials and opportunities for community service, while developing lifelong friendships. Locally, Xi Sigma Chapter, based in Lewes, has 16 longtime members who reside in the Cape Region. Each year, Xi Sigma chooses different charities to support.

The chapter combined the Founder’s Day celebration with its April social, one of many fun opportunities for Xi Sigma’s members and guests during the 2022-23 sorority year.
