Yoga is for everyone

December 15, 2020

My great friend Terry Gardner is the owner of Rehoboth Beach Yoga at Route 1 and Bay Vista Road in Rehoboth. Find info online at rehobothbeachyoga.com.

We met several years ago when she generously offered meeting space for me to give Transcendental Meditation lectures and display my photography on her yoga center's walls. Her teachers are carefully trained and are known in the area for their excellence. Having taken some of their yoga classes, I must agree with that well-deserved reputation. Here is some of her gentle wisdom:

What is yoga and what benefits can I expect?

Yoga is for everyone! There are many styles of yoga, from vigorous to slow and restorative. All yoga will give you a more flexible, more comfortable body and a calmer, more peaceful mind. As the body relaxes and opens up, the mind’s mental pace slows down, and one’s attention is drawn away from anxieties and worries.

Can it help me with my pain?

The mind begins to notice how the body feels in a good way when the poses are releasing tight muscle tension, and aches and pains are eased. The breath becomes deeper, easier and more purposeful.

How often do I need to take classes? Can I do yoga on my own at home?

What are you looking for? Read the descriptions of classes, call for information or try a few different styles to find what suits your needs. Many teachers offer a private session to see if you will be comfortable in the class. I recommend you begin with one or two classes a week to get the poses into your body and memory. Eventually, you will begin to do poses every day at home.

You say yoga is for everyone. I see people doing these incredible bends. I could never do that!

Everyone can do yoga because it can be adapted to the individual. One person may need three blocks to reach a position, another one can touch her toes and still another can touch the chair. You don’t start out flexible; you become flexible incrementally, bit by bit. Each time you do a pose, it becomes a little easier.

Which is better for me: meditation or yoga exercises?

Anyone can be happy to have their body feel better and their mind be calmer; life becomes more pleasant when you feel good. There is more that happens if you add the practice of meditation. For everyone who has ever asked, “Who am I? Why am I here? What is my purpose?” those answers lie within us. The practice of poses and breathing offers tools to prepare the body and mind for meditation.

What makes Rehoboth Beach Yoga stand out?

Rehoboth Beach Yoga teaches a style called Svaroopa yoga. We use blankets and blocks to meet students with different levels in every pose. Classes are small, and every student receives individual attention. You learn together in a comfortable environment with well-trained and compassionate teachers. It’s fun and it’s life-changing.
