Young sailors take over Delaware Bay

Aug. 11 Lewes Yacht Club Junior Regatta offers racing in six fleets

More than 80 young sailors from 10 clubs around the Mid-Atlantic area competed in the Aug. 11 Chesapeake Yacht Racing Association Lewes Yacht Club Junior Regatta in C420s, Lasers, Optimist green, and Optimist red, white and blue. Sailors spread out across the Delaware Bay along Lewes Beach for four hours of racing.

More than 50 local volunteers served on the race committee. Principal race officers included Michelle Bland (420s and Lasers), Kathy O’Hanlon (Optimist red, white and blue fleets) and Don Bland (Optimist green fleet.)

Top three finishers were:

Club 420: 1. Skylor Sweet and Ava Arepally, North East River Yacht Club/Tred Avon Yacht Club; 2. Will Harding and Ava Farley, Severn Sailing Association; 3. Michael Yost and Isabella Hillman, Miles River Yacht Club.

Laser Radial: 1. Henry Ciszewski, Fishing Bay Yacht Club; 2. Willem De Simone, Severn; 3. Jack Grace, Severn.

Optimist green: 1. Morgan Rosenthal, Annapolis Yacht Club; 2. Sophia Buckler, Severn; 3. Sofia Cole, Severn.

Optimist blue: 1. Robert Herzog, Severn; 2. Bryce Herfel, Baltimore County Sailing Center; 3. Robert Carey, Miles River/Tred Avon.

Optimist white: 1. Daniel Skutch Tyson, Severn; 2. Thomas Wood, Severn; 3. Dylan Cook, Severn.

Optimist red: 1. Marcus Kozlowski, Baltimore County.

Optimist overall winners: 1. Robert Herzog; 2. Daniel Skutch Tyson; 3. Marcus Kozlowski.

Lewes Yacht Club sailors competing included William Burke and Will DiPaolo and Bailey Fletcher and Riley Stazzone in C420; Ben O’Neill in Laser; and Henry and Grant Cummins and Andrew Burke in Optimist.
